Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum: Thinking Through Art

In 2003, the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum (ISGM) received funding from the U.S. Department of Education to research students' learning in and from its VTS School Partnership Program. This website includes initial evaluations results from the Institute for Learning Innovation: "...treatment students generated significantly more instances of critical thinking skills and evidence."

Wolfsonian-FIU: Artful Citizenship
In fall 2002, the Wolfsonian-Florida International University was awarded one of seven Arts in Education grants from the U.S. Department of Education to develop an innovative arts-integrated social studies curriculum. Based on VTS, "Artful Citizenship" was developed to teach visual literacy and critical thinking through the Wolfsonian collection.

Evaluators from Curva and Associates followed this project over three years. Significant findings include:
-Students who received the Artful Citizenship program for three years had significantly higher growth rates in visual literacy than comparison group students;
-There was a strong relationship between growth in visual literacy and growth in student achievement in both reading and mathematics; -Learning visual literacy led to the development of students’ critical thinking skills. Download full report.
